Language is traditionally divided into grammar and lexis. In second language acquisition/learning, they take the form of rule-learning (grammar) and vocabulary learning (lexis). Both are important to be able to communicate, yet second language research focuses much more on grammar. There is extensive research done on how learners develop grammatical patterns, what mistakes are typical of learners and how rules can be applied to prevent grammatical errors. Perhaps as a result of this, second language teaching puts much more emphasis on grammar than vocabulary in the second language classroom.
