One of my students in the ESL, English as a Second Language Classroom, has allowed me to share her Mock exam/essay as an example of how one should write a paper. This exam was graded 6 by two different English teachers.

Human rights groups have taken to the streets in cities across the United States to protest the Trump administration's policy to separate asylum-seeking Central American immigrant children from their parents.

The government sees the policy as a necessary deterrent to illegal immigration, but the critics say it is cruel to refugees and asylum seekers fleeing violence in Central America.

Immigration Policy on Collision Course with Fundamental American Values, PDF - Official Website - BenjaminMadeira

My Student's Hook / Attention Getter ::

Would it be unconstitutional to put Americans first? (Attention getter)

Background Issue/ Transitional sentence ::

In 2016 Donald Trump launched his presidential candidacy with a campaign built around the slogan, "Make America Great Again." The slogan represents how he wanted to bring America back to its golden age and lift up the old American values. (Background issue)

Current Situation ::

During his campaign, he presented contentious opinions about immigration. Moreover, he promised to build a wall along the Mexican border to protect the US from the illegal immigrants or "drug bringing rapists" from the bordering states. (Current state of research) (Missing source)

Implication ::

So far, no wall has been built. However, he did make an executive order in one of the first months of his presidency to set up a travel ban to seven Muslim countries. (Implications)

My thesis statement ::

Admittedly, the culture of welcoming refugees and immigrants is the most important American value for many people in the United States. (Telling your readers what the paper is about/ guides your writing and keeps your argument focused/ Thesis statement/ Main idea)

My thesis statement ::

Thus, Trump’s travel ban and his immigration policy are on a collision course with the very foundational values that America was built. (The paragraphs that follow should present an argument(s) and give evidence to support this claim)

My Student's first body paragraph ::

The United States is a country that was founded by settlers from Europe. Moreover, everyone in the country has ancestors that immigrated except for the Native Americans. (Positive case) The US was founded by outcasts from Europe and the rest of the world, who were given a new chance. The statue of liberty stands as a symbol greeting all refugees and immigrants. For instance, underneath the iron lady, you can find the poem "The New Colossus" engraved on the bronze plaque. (Supporting evidence) It partially reads, "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door! " (Lazarus, n.p). (Supporting evidence) The work written under the statue of liberty is a direct contrast to the statements made by Trump concerning the immigrants. Thus, the people that the poem welcomes Trump condemns. (Balsvik et al., in which page? ).

My Student's second body paragraph ::

Trump has made it very clear that he wants stringent immigration policy and has even put up a travel ban to seven Muslim countries, making it impossible for refugees and harder for people with dual citizenship to enter the country. (Negative case) The states banished include Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The restriction was at first deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. However, it was reconsidered and re-installed a few months later. His argumentation behind this ban protects America from terrorism. (Counter argument) Since the 9/11 terror attack on the Twin Towers, America have been in a "war against terror," sending their troops to fight against terror organizations in Iran, Iraq, and Syria. In the last decade, we have seen a rise of terror attracts carried out by Islamist in Europe, which frightens many but strengthens their fair of cultures different from their own (Spangler, n.p). (Supporting evidence)

My Student's third body paragraph ::

In addition to the travel ban, Trump has also canceled the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), which was initiated under the Obama regime. (Negative case) The DACA was a program protecting the Dreamers, children that entered the country illegally or children of illegal immigrants. (Missing source) Consequently, by canceling this program, Trump put thousands of people in an insecure situation, as they are at risk of deportation to the land they might not even remember. (Supporting argument) Most of the Dreamers have lived in the US for as long as they can remember, they might identify themselves as 100% Americans. However, since they do not have documents and citizenship, Trump and many others consider them intruders. In his campaign, Trump put forward claims about how illegal immigrants ruin and weaken the American society by bringing drugs, crime and how aliens take jobs from Americans. (Missing source) In addition, he notably uses Mexico as an example. As previously mentioned Trump famously stated that he would build a wall on the Mexican border to make it harder for people to cross over to the United States. He argues that there are ways to get citizenship legally and that only those with evil intentions will enter the country illegally. (Supporting argument) (Missing source) On the other hand, many argue that getting citizenship is costly and time-consuming. Therefore, many have no other option than to enter the country illegally (Antle III, n.p.). (Counter argument) The Dreamers did not choose to enter the country illegally because their parents took that decision. Therefore, punishing children for crimes committed by their parents is deemed unethical in all other cases. Hence, the citizenship should not be any different.

My Student's Conclusion ::

Trump's immigration policy is deemed unconstitutional by many people and contradicting the fundamental principles of the American society. Moreover, the American society was built upon immigration and the belief that all people are created equal and should be given a fair chance. The Trump’s policy does not allow the desperate refugees from seven Muslim countries to enter the country and children of illegal immigrants are at risk of deportation. (Summarization/ Reconnects to the introduction) Consequently, the Trumpist policy has created massive dissension in the American society on who is considered American and on whether it is constitutional to "put Americans first." On one side, people are protesting the immigration policy claiming it contradicts American values. On the other hand, there are those who are praising Trump for putting Americans first. (Implication) Hence, the different parties involved have fundamental disagreements, putting them on a collision course no one can yet tell the outcome. (Conclusion, Claim)
