Indian society often boasts of its rich culture. This culture is so deeply ingrained, that it is very hard to change it. But parts of it must be modified because it is not okay to be “okay” with it all anymore. It is not okay to suffer in silence; it is not okay if you have to be behind a dupatta every time your cousin visits; it is not okay to stay at home after six in the evening because you are scared and it is not okay if someone makes you feel weak because of gender.<br />
<br />
Our culture always associates a sense of shame with any sexual offence. But the shame is only for the victim — it continues to haunt.<br />
<br />
The Nirbhaya case shocked the nation. It brought thousands of people together, who said “enough is enough.” Thousands took part in marches, shouting slogans, and demanding change — a change in not just the law but also mindsets. People wanted to say that wearing lipstick or short skirts were not an invitation to rape. They wanted a change, so that women were no longer expected to hide their faces to avoid harassment.<br />
<br />
Did that change come? Not entirely. We read about rapes every day in the newspaper, we see reports on TV. It has all been normalized, again.<br />
<br />
That is the real problem. The day we stop having a problem with things we should be having a problem with, is the day the actual problem starts. [...]<br />
<br />
One victim I interacted with, a college student from Bangalore, said: “I was travelling by Metro one evening and had worn my bag in the front because of a broken zipper. After a few minutes, I felt someone’s hand on top of mine, where I was holding the handle for support. I took my hand away, assuming it was an innocent brush. But the next minute, I realized that a man behind me had crept up close. He was breathing down my neck and his hands were feeling up my waist. He was pulling my body close to his. I tried pushing him away, but he didn’t stop. When the train’s doors opened for the next station, I ran out. It was very crowded. There were a lot of people around me, but I couldn’t ask for help. I could not get myself to say anything. I was shocked that something like this was actually happening with me.” [...]<br />
<br />
A working professional in Pune said: “I am all for campaigns and discussions. But what is it really going to change? This isn’t something that is new to our society. I feel we must be cautious, rather than expecting the world to behave.”<br />
<br />
We cannot expect societies and mindsets to change overnight. That just won’t happen. But that does not mean that we stop trying. If we want a better India, we need to start working towards that goal. </span></div>

A photograph showing a young woman smiling bemusedly at an incensed English Defence League protester has been widely shared as a symbol of Birmingham’s defiance in the face of the far right.<br />
<br />
The woman pictured has been identified as Saffiyah Khan, who is from Birmingham. Her family has links to Bosnia and Pakistan. She said the picture was taken when she stepped in to defend a woman wearing a hijab, who had been surrounded by a group of the protesters after she called them racists.<br />
<br />
“She was quite a small woman,” Khan said. “When I realized that nothing was being done [by the police] and she was being surrounded 360, that’s when I came in as well.”<br />
<br />
She described the man who confronted her as “an angry man having a bit of a rant”.<br />
<br />
Speaking to Radio New Zealand, Khan said the best responses she has had from the photograph were from people who had got in touch to tell her how the picture had personally affected them. “I’ve had lots of stories about [people’s] daughters being affected and how they see me as a role model,” she said.<br />

Khan told Vice that she hoped to use her newfound status to “fight against racism on the streets of the UK”. She added: “[I’ve] got big things planned, focusing on the bigger picture. Being viral is worthless if nothing helpful comes of it.” </span></div>

Back then, I doubted anything was going anywhere anyway. While all the other girls sprouted breasts between sixth and seventh grade, my chest was as flat as my back.<br />

The other talk was about what to do if a cop stopped me.<br />
<br />
Momma fussed and told daddy I was too young for that. He argued that I wasn’t too young to get arrested or shot.<br />
<br />
“Starr-Starr, you do whatever they tell you to do,” he said. “Keep your hands visible. Don’t make any sudden moves. Only speak when they speak to you.”<br />
<br />
I knew it must’ve been serious. Daddy has the biggest mouth of anybody I know, and if he said to be quiet, I needed to be quiet.<br />
<br />
I hope somebody had the talk with Khalil.<br />
<br />
He cusses under his breath, turns Tupac down, and maneuvers the Impala to the side of the street. We’re on carnation where most of the houses are abandoned and half the streetlights are busted. Nobody around but us and the cop.<br />
<br />
Khalil turns the ignition off. “Wonder what this fool wants.”<br />
<br />
The officer parks and puts his brights on. I blink to keep from being blinded.<br />
<br />
I remember something else Daddy said. If you’re with somebody, you better hope they don’t have anything on them, or both of y’all going down.<br />
<br />
“K, you don’t have anything in the car, do you?” I ask.<br />
<br />
He watches the cop in his side mirror. “Nah.”<br />
<br />
The officer approaches the driver’s door and taps the window. Khalil cranks the handle to roll it down. As if we aren’t blinded enough, the officer beams his flashlight in our faces.<br />
<br />
“License, registration and proof of insurance.”<br />
<br />
Khalil breaks a rule – he doesn’t do what the cop wants. “What you pull us over for?”<br />
<br />
“Khalil,” I plead. “Do what he said.”<br />
<br />
Khalil groans and takes his wallet out. The officer follows his movements with the flashlight.<br />
<br />
My heart pounds loudly, but daddy’s instructions echo in my head: Get a good look at the cop’s face. If you can remember his badge number, that’s even better.<br />
<br />
With the flashlight following Khalil’s hands, I make out the numbers on the badge – one-fifteen. He's white, midthirties to early forties, has a brown buzz cut and thin scar over his lip.<br />
<br />
Khalil hands the officer his papers and license.<br />
<br />
One-fifteen looks over them. “Where are you two coming from tonight?”<br />
<br />
“Nunya,” Khalil says, meaning none of your business. “What you pull me over for?”<br />
<br />
“Your taillight’s broken.”<br />
<br />
“So are you gon’ give me a ticket or what?” Khalil asks.<br />
<br />
“You know what? Get out of the car, smart guy.”<br />
<br />
“Man, just give me my ticket –”<br />
<br />
“Get out of the car! Hands up, where I can see them.”<br />
<br />
Khalil gets out with his hands up. One-fifteen yanks him by his arm and pins him against the back door.<br />
<br />
I fight to find my voice. “He didn’t mean –”<br />
<br />
“Hands on the dashboard!” the officer barks at me. “Don’t move!”<br />
<br />
I do what he tells me, but my hands are shaking too much to be still.<br />
<br />
He pats Khalil down. “Okay, smart mouth, let’s see what we find on you today.”<br />
<br />
“You ain’t gon’ find nothing,” Khalil says.<br />
<br />
One-fifteen pats him down two or three more times. He turns up empty.<br />
<br />
“Stay here,” he tells Khalil. “And you.” He looks in the window at me. “Don’t move.”<br />
<br />
I can’t even nod.<br />
<br />
The officer walks back to his patrol car.<br />
<br />
My parents haven’t raised me to fear the police, just to be smart around them. They told me it’s not smart to move while a cop has his back to you.<br />

Khalil does. He opens the driver’s door.<br />

<div class="JBMCode"> This paper discusses how the curriculum is shaped by the situational logic of a technology-filled classroom, and how this logic is under the influence of ideas about student–teacher interactions and ‘do-it-yourself learning’. It analyses case material from a school using game theory. Free access in the classroom to the Internet, games, and chatting makes it difficult for the teacher to control the students’ operations. When a student deems a threat to be empty, it is not rational for that student to allow the threat to influence his or her own actions. The laissez-faire regime is a result of rational considerations made by both parties. However, when students do not assume responsibility for learning, an accountability failure arises as a rational response to the design of the institutional framework. </div> <br /> <br />
